My Top 8 Favorite IEW Products That Make Teaching Writing Less Stressful (and Way More Effective)

Mar 29, 2025

Let’s be honest — teaching writing at home isn’t always easy.

I’ve had days where we stared at blank pages longer than we should have. Days when grammar rules brought more sighs than structure. And days when I questioned if I was even doing it right.

But after 14+ years of homeschooling, I’ve learned something important: the tools you use matter. And when you find the right ones — the ones that actually support both you and your child — writing can go from overwhelming to doable… even enjoyable.

That’s why I want to share my favorite IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) products. These are the ones I turn to year after year — because they work, they’re practical, and they lighten the load for both parent and student.

1. Structure and Style for Students (SSS)

Think of this as your co-teacher. With video lessons guiding your child through every step, you don’t have to prep or panic. Your role becomes more of a coach and cheerleader — still involved, but without the weight of doing it all yourself.

2. Fix It! Grammar

One sentence a day. That’s it. But it’s enough to build grammar skills over time without turning your homeschool into grammar boot camp. It’s gentle and consistent — and that’s what mastery needs.

3. Themed Writing Books

Whether you’re covering U.S. history, Bible stories, or classic literature, these writing books weave seamlessly into your other subjects. Writing becomes relevant, not random — and that makes all the difference.

4. Student Resource Packet (SRP)

This is our writing toolbox. Whenever my students feel stuck, we open it. It’s packed with everything they need — keyword outlines, dress-ups, sentence openers — all in one place. No flipping through notebooks or guessing what comes next. I have used this with all four of my children and still reference it. You'll definitely have a huge ROI with this resource.

5. A Word Write Now

More than a thesaurus, it’s a guide to help your child describe character traits, emotions, and actions with purpose. It encourages thoughtful word choice in a way that’s accessible for kids of all ages. It is super helpful for creative writing.

6. Portable Walls

It’s like a pop-up writing center. Everything they need — right in front of them. This little tri-fold boosts independence and focus, which is gold when you're teaching multiple kids (or need a moment to breathe). I love a good quick-reference guide. This is another resource that will give you a huge ROI.

7. Magnum Opus Magazine

There’s something powerful about seeing your work in print. Submitting to this magazine gives your student a chance to be celebrated — and gives writing a real-world purpose. Two of my students' papers are featured on the cover. Even more of my students are featured in this edition.

8. IEW Writing Tools App

For on-the-go families or kids who enjoy screens, this app puts all their writing tools in their pocket. It’s a modern twist that keeps them connected to the method — even when life gets a little busy. This is super helpful for high school students.

Final Thoughts:
You don’t have to do writing alone. These resources have helped me teach with more peace and purpose — and I hope they do the same for you. 💛

If you’re just starting with IEW or trying to figure out what to try next, these are the ones I’d start with every time.
